Makassar City – The Pride of Sulawesi

Makassar city (previously known as Ujungpandang or Ujung Pandang) is a capital city of South Sulawesi or South Celebes and my birth town. Makassar is the biggest city at eastern Indonesia. Makassar has many interesting place which good for sightseeing. They are Akarena Beach, Banting Murung, Fort Somba Opu, Tomb of the Tallo’s Kings, Fort Rotterdam, and the beautiful Losari Beach. These two previous places is the best places for sightseeing.

Pantai Losari or Losari Beach is located at western part of Makassar City. This beach is the best place for enjoying the sunset at afternoon or evening. It was also known as “the longest restaurant in the world” because there were many stalls line up almost one kilometer long selling seafood for their main dish. Beside the seafood, these stalls also sold pisang epe or roasted banana filled with caramel. At present time, these stalls have been removed to a place around Major’s resident at southern part of Losari Beach area. On early 2006, Losari Beach is the new icon of Nautical Yard of Makassar City. A fine beauty in the middle of city.

Fort Rotterdam also known as Benteng Ujungpandang is a fortress build by the Dutch Colonial and located at western coast of Makassar City. About 90% buildings in the Fort Rotterdam still intact and became a good place for sightseeing. In the Fort Rotterdam area, there is La Galigo Museum which stores an epic called La Galigo. La Galigo is the longest epic story in the world. It was created before the Mahabharata. La Galigo tells us about Sawerigading the bravest warrior of the ancient Bugis.

Makassar City as one of gate through East Indonesia, the local government tries to increase the facilities that support development on these two places for example of tourism. So, with all these explanations, I hope Makassar City will be your first target to visit for your next vacation.

Good, thanks for posting.
