Pekanbaru as the capital city of Riau province has become one of city with the biggest income in Sumatra Island. This development happened especially in property, consumption and banking sector.
In the past, even though Riau province is well-known for its oil produce from petroleum and oil palm, the development of Riau including Pekanbaru ran so slow because of the lack of budget. This was happened because the allocation of the budget for development of Riau is so few compared to the budget for central government. But, since the implementation of regional autonomy for Riau on January 1st, 2001, Pekanbaru received enough fund to build its city.
Now, the advancement of Pekanbaru can be seen from construction of malls like Mal Pekanbaru in 2003, Mal Ciputra Seraya in 2004 and mal SKA in 2005. Beside that, Pekanbaru has many projects to buid new roads and buildings. Also, the fact that Sultan Syarif Kasim II airport (Pekanbaru’s airport) is the second busiest airport in Sumatra island after Polonia airport (Medan) proved that the activities in Pekanbaru is very plenty and busy.
The fast development in Pekanbaru of course also improves the welfare of its citizen. But this development must be followed with the development of its society especially in education because only educated person who can brings Pekanbaru into prosperity.
